Animal Kingdom Harambe Village -- "1961" References

Here are pictures of the "1961" references in Harambe Village. I don't know what they refer to, since AK of course opened in 1998, and WDW itself opened in 1971. What happened in 1961? What is WDI referencing here?

This is a public bench near "downtown" Harambe. TDLFAN might take issue with the paintwork that's needed here.

A closer view of the same bench. The 1961 reference is evident.

A signpost near downtown Harambe.

A closer view of the same signpost. The dedication year repeats the 1961.

And here is another signpost nearer to the entrance of Kilimanjaro Safaris.

Here is a response I got from LP on a possible explanation. You can check this out on the web at URL = http://www.textilemuseum.ca/ex_imagefact4.html

Miaka 10 Ya Uhuru 1961-1971
10th anniversary of the independence of Tanganyika
T90.0297 Gift of Barbara Barde

Tanganyika, formerly a British colony, became independent in 1961. In 1964 Tanganyika merged with Zanzibar to become Tanzania, with the prominent statesman Julius Nyerere as president. On this kanga (skirt-cloth), a circle wreathed with cotton encloses a sun rising over a map of Tanzania, with the country's national flag.

A road leads to the sun, with symbols of progressive education, health care and farming - modern buildings, an open book, a hypodermic syringe and stethoscope, a machete and two hoes. At the corners of the design are circles that each enclose a gem diamond. The border shows Mt. Kilimanjaro, and at the edge are bolls of cotton, the world's largest cash crop and an important source of African prosperity.
